Let me welcome you to Friedman Place, an assisted
lifestyle community for blind and visually impaired adults.
Here at Friedman Place, we believe that losing your
vision shouldn't mean giving up your independence or dignity, your
privacy or your opportunities to socialize with family and friends.
In this community you will have the support you need to experience
life to the fullest.
Friedman Place is in the heart of Chicago, at 5527
North Maplewood, just off Lincoln Avenue between Foster and Bryn
Mawr. It is accessible to Chicago's many cultural, social, and educational
opportunities. We are not just a residential facility but a vibrant
community in which people with impaired vision can reach their full
potential.
At Friedman Place we have 74 studio apartments and
7 one-bedroom apartments, with a variety of floor plans. You or
your family member will enjoy the privacy of a modern, well-equipped
apartment home, with carpeting in the living and sleeping areas.
Each apartment has a kitchenette with a sink, refrigerator, and
microwave oven with Braille or large-print controls. Large, private
bathrooms have wheelchair-accessible showers with cedar seats. The
heating and air-conditioning in each apartment have Braille or large-print
controls. Apartments are all pre-wired for telephones and cable
TV.
Help is never far away when you are in your apartment
or in any of the common areas. There is an emergency alert system
in the bathroom, and you will be given an alarm pendant—one
push of the button and the staff person on duty will know that you
need help. Our staff members have been trained to work with the
blind and visually impaired and are available 24 hours a day.
When you first become part of the Friedman Place community,
you will be oriented to your apartment and to the hallways, dining
room, and public spaces. Whenever you need a helping hand, staff
will provide assistance with activities of daily living, such as
bathing, dressing, shaving, and walking. The facility has been designed
with your comfort and needs in mind. The hallways have special lighting
and strong color contrasts to make them easier for people with limited
vision to navigate. All signs are in Braille and large type.
