Competency and Consent in Real-World Practice

Friedman Place

The need to obtain informed consent before providing treatment or services of almost any kind is a fundamental principle of the healing professions and the law. Informed consent cannot be provided unless the person is competent to understand what he or she is agreeing.

This workshop provides practical and concrete guidance on how to assess the clinical competency of an individual and to provide and assure informed consent. It is intended primarily for social workers, nurses, counselors, case managers, psychologists, and physicians.

Specific issues discussed including why competency and consent is important, who is (and is not) able to give consent, how to assess competency and provide the information needed for informed consent, documentation best-practices, and the role of ethical frameworks and decision-making.

Our presenter, Alexander Brown, MBA, PhD, LCSW has over twenty-five years’ experience providing services and managing programs in nonprofit organizations. He is currently Executive Director of Friedman Place, which provides residential supported living to adults who are blind or visually impaired in Chicago. He has also provided direct counseling and case management services to populations as varied as older adults, people with severe and persistent mental illnesses, people in crisis and/or who have experienced trauma, and people with disabilities.
